This Sensor in Batteries Measures Temperature - NTC Thermistor
Some battery cells have a temperature sensor, aka an NTC thermistor. You can easily tell by the third wire sticking out of them. When the battery gets warmer, the resistance across the thermistor goes down. This is how the charge management system can tell if the battery is overheating and limit or stop the charging current.
