In Florida, these habitats are in decline, so we’re making a few of our own! This Gopher Tortoise (23-1839) was discovered by Fort Lauderdale residents because his shell had been painted with bright colors. Fortunately, he was in good health otherwise. Because tortoises and other turtle species absorb vitamins via the sun’s UV rays, paint on their shell can severely compromise their health and can also prevent them from camouflaging from predators. After 79 days in rehabilitation, his shell was back to its normal coloration and he was ready to return to the wild. Happy F

Running into the week like… On July 1, this Gopher Tortoise (23-2571) was admitted from Fort Myers after it was attacked by a dog. Upon initial exam, staff noted the tortoise had puncture wounds in its shell and was missing a piece of its carapace (upper shell). Staff flushed the Gopher Tortoise’s wounds, applied bandages, and offered supportive care including antibiotics and pain medication. The tortoise continues to recover, receiving bandage changes while staff continue to monitor its healing
